A serial site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the project consists of three oyster beds, a seashore and sixteen architectural properties throughout Muharraq, each relating to one aspect of the pearling economy, connected by a visitor pathway. Al-Muharrak’ın Yeniden Canlandırılması Projesi

Al-Muharrak’ın Yeniden Canlandırılması Projesi, Ağa Han Mimarlık Ödülleri 2017-2019 Dönemi’ni kazanan 6 proje arasında yer alıyor.

İnci endüstrisi, eski başkent Muharraq merkez olmak üzere, Bahrain’in ekonomisinde tarihsel olarak önemli bir yere sahip. 1930’larda kültür incisinin geliştirilmesi ile önemini yitiren şehir, zenginliğini ve statüsünü petrol sayesinde zengin olan Manama’ya bıraktı. Muharraq’ın yerli nüfusunun yerini ise çoğunlukla bekar olup kiralık daire paylaşan göçmen işçiler aldı.

Şeyh İbrahim Kültür ve Araştırma Merkezi / Sheikh Ebrahim Centre for Culture and Research yönetimindeki birkaç yapının yeni kullanımlara adapte edilmesi ve restorasyonu ile başlayan proje, “İnci Rotası, Bir Ada Ekonomisinin Tanıklığı / Pearling Path, Testimony of an Island Economy” başlığı ile pek çok mimarı, plancıyı ve araştırmacıyı kapsayan geniş bir programa dönüştü. Proje kasabanın inci ticareti ile bağlantılı tarihinin altını çizerken bölgenin demografik karakterinin yeniden dengelenmesini, çevrede yapılan iyileştirmeler ve yeni kamusal alanlarla bölgenin yerli halk için yeniden çekici kılınmasını amaçlıyor. Özel sektör – kamu ortaklığında gerçekleşen proje, basit dalgıç evlerinden avlulu malikanelere ve ticaret için kullanılan depolara kadar bir dizi alanın ve birçok binanın korunmasını, buna ek olarak diğer cephelerin elden geçmesini ve dört tane yeni binanın inşasını kapsıyor. Tüm bu alanlar ziyaretçi rotasıyla bağlanırken yıkımlardan kalan boş araziler kentsel alanlar olarak peyzajlandırılıyor.

Geleneksel yapıların korunması ve restorasyonu, artık olmayan rüzgar kulelerinin iklim kontrolü için eski hallerine döndürülmesini de kapsıyor. Kullanılan malzemeler orijinalleriyle örtüşüyor, özellikle yıkılan yapılardaki mercan taşları ve ahşap yeniden kullanılıyor. 1940’larda bölgedeki yer döşemelerinde yaygın olarak kullanılan terrazzo sokak mobilyalarında kullanılıyor ve içine istiridye kabuğu parçacıkları da dahil ediliyor. Terrazzo direklerin üzerindeki küre şeklinde beyaz sokak lambaları inci ile ilişkili sembolizmi öne çıkarırken yol bulmaya yardımcı oluyor.

Yeni binalar göze çarpan çağdaş mimari ifadeler kullanırken, tarihi çevrenin ölçeğine ve sokak çizgilerine de saygı gösteriyor. İnci Rotası Ziyaretçi ve Deneyim Merkezi / The Pearling Path Visitor and Experience Centre ile Mimari Miras Evi / House of Architectural Heritage brütalist bir estetiği benimsiyor; ilkinin formu rüzgar kulelerini ve komşu yapıların geleneksel mercan bloklarını taklit ediyor. Yeşil Arkeolojiler Pavyonu / Archaeologies of Green Pavilion yerel bitkilerin olduğu, birbiriyle bağlantılı bir dizi bahçeyi öne çıkarıyor, Dar Al Jinaa Geleneksel Müzik Merkezi / Dar Al Jinaa Centre for Traditional Music ise bir dizi yapının arasında gizlenerek güneşin yansımalarından korunurken sürekli bir esinti alıyor. Burada veya diğer etkinlik hollerindeki performans programlarında inci avcılarının şarkılarına da yer veriliyor.
