Finalist, TerraViva Rising From Ashes

Spika Mimarlık'ın "TerraViva Rising From Ashes" yarışması için tasarladığı proje önerisi.

TerraViva Architecture tarafından düzenlenen Rising from Ashes uluslararası mimari fikir yarışması, yangın sonrası tahrip olmuş alanlar için mimarlığın nasıl bir iyileşme, yeniden düşünme ve dönüşüm aracı olabileceğini tartışmaya açıyor. Farklı ülkelerden çok sayıda katılımın gerçekleştiği yarışmada, ekolojik duyarlılık ve mekânsal yaklaşımıyla öne çıkan REVERENCE & REFUGE, jüri değerlendirmesi sonucunda finalist projeler arasında yer almaya hak kazandı.

Proje Raporu:

REVERENCE & REFUGE

This project, submitted for the RISING FROM ASHES architectural competition, provides a powerful response to the devastating California wildfires. Named REVERENCE & REFUGE, the design focuses on both honoring the past trauma (Reverence) and providing physical and emotional security for the future (Refuge). The core mission is to create a resilient center for post-traumatic healing, community integration, and comprehensive disaster preparedness.

Architectural Vision: Minimalist Serenity

The architectural language is intentionally minimalist, honest, and unadorned, offering visual serenity to counteract the chaos of the disaster. Structures feature low-lying, horizontal forms with extensive wide-span openings and glass façades to maintain a constant visual connection with the regenerating landscape—a symbol of enduring hope and life cycles. The palette of concrete, steel, and fire-resistant timber emphasizes durability and safety. Internal spaces are flexible and saturated with natural light, promoting mental well-being and a feeling of being secure.

The Heart: The Healing Court

The complex revolves around a large central courtyard (The Healing Court). This integrated space, planted with local, fire-resistant flora, serves as the community’s social and emotional nexus, facilitating shared experience and the crucial task of rebuilding community bonds.

The Innovative Steel Structure: The Resilience Canopy

Central to the design is the Light Steel Structure (The Resilience Canopy), which embodies the project’s dual mandate:

Reverence Function: During normal use, the canopy provides essential shading for community activities and functions as a Memorial Exhibition Area. This space publicly displays remnants and memories from the fire, dedicating the structure to acts of collective remembrance.

Refuge Function: In the event of a future disaster, the steel frame transforms rapidly into a fully functional Emergency Shelter and Support Center. Utilizing pre-fabricated modular elements and cladding, the structure can quickly scale up to house numerous individuals and establish vital services, including temporary medical treatment facilities and feeding stations.

Conclusion

The “REVERENCE & REFUGE” project utilizes architecture as a psychological tool, offering both an opportunity for respectful mourning and tangible security against future threats. This dual function, rooted in minimalist aesthetics and high resilience, demonstrates a commitment to both spiritual healing and practical preparedness, transforming the scars of the fire into a symbol of community strength and rebirth.
