Basic Degree Information/Description:
The Master of Science in Architecture (M.S. Arch.) program is a non-studio, post-professional research program that prepares students for careers in research, teaching, and consulting. The focus of the program is research in architecture; areas of research include historic preservation, architectural history, sustainability in architecture, and international community planning and design. The program stresses critical writing and research methods. The program takes advantage of its location in downtown San Antonio and a rich heritage of historic architecture and urbanism. In general, UTSA Graduate application deadline should be observed, however applicants wishing to be considered for financial assistance should submit all application materials to the Graduate School by January 19th for priority admission review for the following fall term.

Why pursue an M.S. in Architecture at UTSA?
The College of Architecture’s location in downtown San Antonio, composed of several historic layers form the 17th century to the present, makes our programs the perfect laboratory for the in-depth exploration of creativity, professions, and research.

The Master of Science in Architecture (MS ARCH) program stresses critical writing and research methods, which prepare students for careers in research, teaching, consulting, and further graduate study. The program is also enhanced by the college’s location in Downtown San Antonio, which has a rich heritage of historic architecture and urbanism.

The MS ARCH program has four major research focus areas:

Urban and Regional Planning:
Urban and regional planning provides students with an introductory understanding of the historical, social, international, and physical context of comprehensive land use planning and sustainable urbanism.

Sustainable Architecture:
Research in sustainable architecture provides students with an understanding of both the theoretical and applied sides of sustainable design with a particular emphasis on environmental sustainability. Research areas include the history and theory of sustainable design, methods and tools of sustainable design, and high performance buildings and communities.

Architectural History:
Graduate study in architectural history provides students with essential training in the perceptual, historical, and critical analysis of architecture and cities. This specialization prepares students to pursue career opportunities in architectural history in academic and institutional settings, as well as for post-graduate degree or to pursue careers in education, law, historic preservation, urban planning, and publishing.

Historic Preservation:
Historic preservation is a process of design for continuity and management of change within an existing historic context. Historic preservation offers specialized education in historic preservation design, technology, planning and management through graduate-level courses.

Additional Research Areas:
In addition to these four major areas of focus, the faculty members in the college pursue research in a variety of fields including: Building Design, Theory of Architecture, International Practice, Regionalism, Architecture of Mexico and the Southwest, Health & Wellness, Design/Build, and Fabrication.

The College of Architecture also offers two certificate programs in: Historic Preservation, and Urban and Regional Planning.

Funding Opportunities:
The Department of Architecture offers opportunities for competitive recruitment scholarships, for qualified applicants, which allow out-of-state and international applicants to pay tuition at the in-state rates. All applicants to the department’s graduate programs are automatically considered for these scholarships. The College of Architecture also has an annual scholarship program for existing students, which includes college scholarships as well as scholarships offered by the Texas Architectural Foundation (TAF). Applications for these scholarships are solicited in the spring semester for the following academic year.

Course Scheduling and Offerings:
Most architecture graduate courses are offered in the day time. Design studios, the core component of the M ARCH programs, are typically offered on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, between 1 pm and 5 pm. a limited number of graduate seminars are available in the evening.

Career Options Available for an M.S. in Architecture Graduate:
The majority of students enrolled in the two professional programs in the College of Architecture (M ARCH 2 & M ARCH 3) continue to practice architecture and pursue architectural licensure. Some of those students, however, also pursue careers in other built environment and creative arts professions such as: land development, graphic design, planning, etc. Students in the research program (MS ARCH) pursue career opportunities in academic and institutional settings. Many of them also continue to pursue PhD and other post-graduate degrees.

Degree Requirements:
The minimum number of semester credit hours requirements for the Master of Science in Architecture degree, exclusive of coursework or other study required to remove admission deficiencies, is 33.
