Educating the Future: Architectural Education in International Perspective

Konferans, 21-23 Mart 2013 tarihinde İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi'nde gerçekleşiyor.

This is an activity created as an EAAE Project of “Improving Turkish School Relationships with EAAE and Member Schools”

PAPER PRESENTATION
This is an international academic meeting, sharing experiences and re-thinking on architecture in the context of identity, legitimacy and multidisciplinarity considering today’s changing agenda and values. Besides sharing the individual innovative thoughts on architectural education, schools all over Europe and Turkey will have the chance to experience and discuss the differences, introduce themselves and make future engagements within an atmosphere of face to face contact at a big city full of cultural diversity. Discussions will be held on curricula: different profiles/same diplomas; research and funding: opportunities and recent developments; similarities and differences: architecture and the disciplines of art, design and construction; and practice: relationship to the profession.

Curricula: different profiles/same diplomas
Architects are licensed to build… They graduate from various schools all over the world. The basic knowledge and skills belonging to architecture for thinking, designing and constructing is taught in these schools. Do all of the recent graduates in architecture have sufficient quality? What are the differences among the various architectural programs and their reflections? Do we need accreditation? What is the mission of an architect? What are the differences among the values belonging to various schools/countries?

Research and funding: opportunities and recent developments
Architecture is a discipline. Research produces knowledge, insight and understanding. Knowledge is produced through thinking and making. What kind of knowledge and research is key to the field? How can designing play a role in the knowledge processes? Who are the investors for architectural research? Is there a connection between research and making? Does changing the statue/affiliation increase the quality/success in architectural research? How can research help to develop new technologies, methods and tools for design?

Similarities and differences: architecture and the disciplines of art, design and construction

Architecture shares the same territories with some of the other disciplines… The limits of research and practice in architecture overlap with interior architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, industrial design and art. How do we distinguish the place, the size and the subject of design? What is the product of architecture?

Practice: relationship to the profession
Architecture is a field of practice… What are the expectations of the professionals from school? Who is the subject of detail and maintenance issues? Is there a mission like social and physical sustainability for an architect? What are the stimulators for the spatial organization and elements of space? What are the international working conditions?

WORKSHOP: Intervening Istanbul
The workshop is a platform for experiencing team work with the participants from various schools on reading the dynamics of Istanbul and making an intervention to city life by constructing an interaction point. Schools are invited to take part in the workshop by their four representatives: one academician and three students. They will join mixed teams of schools assisted by the coordinators who are not the leaders of the teams. Teams might choose leaders or set their own rules. The first rule comes from us: members of the teams will be considered as creators. In other words, “academician” and “student” statues are not valid during the workshop process. Subject and place of the workshop will be announced on the workshop date.

EXHIBITION: Starting architectural education
Considering Architecture as a unique discipline comprising knowledge of art, engineering and sociology, it can be understood how schools approaches to architectural education might differ. The starting activities/courses are supposed to constitute a vision for a new-coming student for the rest of her/his future architectural education. All European and Turkish universities are invited to share their first three months works of the students. The works might be final products or short exercises belonging to various courses of the first semester curricula. The main aim is to express the vision of the schools through one poster. The posters will be published in the conference book after the conference event.
