The building’s curved walls and multi-peaked roof give it a tent-like appearance. The façade is composed of cast panels made from recycled glass. Exhibition spaces are organised around a large staircase in the main lobby, echoing the curved forms of the façades. Daylight floods the interior through the glass ceiling, complemented by two rooftop terraces – one facing Market Square, the other the sea.
The jury praised City, Sky and Sea as an elegant, sculptural museum concept. The building opens to both the shore and the surrounding urban fabric with its playful, pavilion-like form. Stage 2 introduced several improvements: terraces and a recessed glass roof were added, the functional layout clarified, and the exhibition flow enhanced through open central areas with auxiliary functions arranged around them. Following these refinements, the building now exhibits a clear spatial hierarchy with more generous sea views, and a flexible layout that accommodates both visitors and staff.
Nonetheless, the jury found the building still unnecessarily large for its location. The expansive glass roof and façades present potential technical and cost challenges in Helsinki’s northern climate, and the extensive use of glass complicates construction cost estimation and management. The curved walls of the exhibition spaces remain suboptimal for exhibition use, and some auxiliary spaces continue to obstruct sea views. Achieving the targeted carbon footprint relies on the assumption that the glass façades can be produced from recycled materials.
