MEA2013 Awards

The MEA2013 Awards is a new International Design Awards’ competition, organized by Building Green Magazine, honoring the most innovative and creative design solutions that have been completed during the last five years in the Mediterranean zone.

These awards are an opportunity to point out innovative sustainable design projects realized around the Mediterranean basin, where climate and economic conditions are akin.

The goal is to enhance the exchange of ideas on environmentally conscious design, and enrich the ecological sustainability approach. It also aims at highlighting projects that follow the principles of sustainability in architecture, mainly through environmentally responsive passive design solutions.

Mostly welcome, for the MEA 2013 Awards, are projects that draw from local resources, respect regional identity, promote diversity and comply with ecological principles.

Applications for the MEA2013 Awards will be available from February 5 to April 25 at the MEA2013 Awards site. MEA2013 covers all buildings that have been completed in the Mediterranean zone in the following categories:
Civic, Urban, Residential, Healthcare, Cultural, Leisure, Commercial, Design Projects completed during the last five years (after January 1st 2007) are eligible for the MEA2013 Awards. Each participant architect, or groups of architects, may submit only one project, in digital format.

Curators & Committees
The curators of this project are: Agnes Couvelas, architect (www.couvelas.net) and Manolis Iliakis, architect-spatial designer (www.yolkstudio.gr).

There are also two committees supporting the competition. A judging committee that is designated to select submitted projects and an honorary committee, that is asked to comment on the prizes, if wishing.

Judging criteria
All submitted projects must be in accordance with the principles listed below:
1.The design must address the principles of sustainability, improving the quality of life for the occupants
2. The project must combine ecological design with a heightened sense of creativity, maximizing passive energy innovations
3. The project must balance aesthetic integrity and contextual sensibility with frugality and moderation in the use of forms and materials.

  • Additional information, descriptive of the project
  • Documentation must be submitted in English
  • The project description should express the underlying design idea, the spatial concept and information about the use of materials. If the building’s concept fulfills guidelines of sustainability, a brief statement is requested

Supplementary Information for Participants

  • A brief curriculum vitae (approx. 200 words, in English)
  • Picture of the candidate or the group
  • Contact information of the candidate or group (country, city, phone nr, website, mail address)
  • Data sheet with the specifications of the completed project (client, designers, collaborators, chronology)

Selection procedure
After the closing date, a list of entries that fulfill the terms and criteria of the Awards will be initially selected by the curators. Shortlisted entries will proceed to the second and final stage of evaluation by the judging committee. All judges will examine and grade each project from 1 to 10, commenting on their decision. Best entries will be awarded 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize (maximum 3 prizes) in each building category.

The final results will be announced to the public and to the members of the honorary committee to further comment on the results if wishing. A report giving the reasons for awarding the Prizes will also be communicated on the competition website. The winning projects will receive a MEA2013 Award Certificate.

Fee
No entrance fee is required.

Registration and entries
All entries will be submitted online and in English only.
Submissions may include a PDF file with no more than three (3) A1 pdf pages, followed by a 250 words page describing the project.

Alterations
The organizers vindicate the right to alter the terms of the competition without previous notice. Any alteration will be communicated in http://www.meaawards.gr  The organizers also withhold the right to postpone the procedure of the competition at any stage and uncalled-for.
