Katılımcı, Bandırma Tasarım Parkı Yarışması

Açıklama Raporu (İngilizce):

BANDIRMA PARK COMPETITION
A NEW PARK FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CITY

FUTURE PARK: COEXISTING IN NATURE

Today Bandırma is a transit-city, still developing in the triangle of industry, agriculture and urbanization.

At the same time, Bandırma is in the economic hinterland of nearby cities, especially Istanbul. Therefore, it will be inevitable for Bandırma’s economy to benefit from these opportunities in the near future. This will consequently lead to emerge new demographic and urban patterns.

DECENTRALIZATION

In near future, displacement of existing port to its new location and new settlements on east and south, new university campus will create a shift on city centre. Therefore the hill, where the competition site is located, and its immediate surroundings have a crucial value as the last piece of nature remaining in the heart of the city.

Even now, the hill and nearby woodland are the only green area within the walking distance to city centre. They are the last natural thresholds which are inevitably under pressure of urbanization. The site itself has a dramatic rural characteristic with its meadows, groves and ruins.

The fictional future projection is based on the shift of the city center to existing port area. Within the near future scenario, the port is a potential new hub, with the new innovative economy, cultural and recreational programs. It is a meeting place where the city is diversified. With new pier park and new urban context on site, city will transform its original industrial character, gateway position into a different dynamic and become a new HUB in region.

All paths, including the existing transit ways linking the port, the shoreline and the railway are taken out of their industrial transportation context and transformed into cultural, economic and urban links. This approach also provides a significant driving force to the area to become a new center of attraction with an accessible recreational shoreline, while presenting a new environment for cultural and economical production. It is intended to create a youthful new center, regenerated area of the city.

RURAL TO URBAN

The design approach has been discussed over contradictory problems of urbanization such as expansion, diversification, growth of the city, and preservation of its natural-rural characteristic.

The main motivation of design intention and the future scenario is to infill the program, which is quite intense, while preserving the whole dramatic and natural landscape features. New spatial program diffuses with its all requirements, into the existing landscape by articulating the mass carefully.

EXPLORE TRACES- UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THE LAND- DISCOVER ITS POTENTIALS- HIGHLIGHT AND REDEFINE THEM/ ARTICULATE TRACES- INFILL/DIFFUSE CAREFULLY THE NEW PROGRAM

DISCOVER /EXPLORE

The structural traces, morphological relationships, the dramatic wind effects on tree, along with all the vegetative life, have been delicately explored and became the traces of formation to the architectural microforms.

As an approach, design is to reconstruct nature with the sensitivity of an archaeologist. This attitude is based on the desire to re-examine the nature in a new, rational perspective, rather than the mere admiration. Both natural and cultural entities are blended with new subprograms, forming a structural link between the previous existence and the future behavior.

What is worth to preserve?

A tree: Platanus occidentails/ a single and monumental tree, trees deformed by the wind

A concrete ruins with rational circular grid/ fountain of an old building

Sub plantation: Gramineae and grasses/ meadow,

Cobble stone paths/ with a new interpretation/ reuse of remaining: compacted stone ballast

Alternative public spaces located inner zones that sheltered the strong winter winds and on the hillside which

The recognition of existing Gramineae and grasses with ultimate sensitivity, incorporating other existing C4 plant species, embrace their tranquil effects.

Appreciate solitary presence of a single Platanus occidentalis tree and formed a canopy to emphasize its monumentality.

MASSING

In particular, the design institute has been articulated on the historical ruins, as a large settlement with its own gardens and courtyards. Therefore people can infiltrate this public area, interact with the happenings, and establish a sincere communication with the existing ones. The artistic potential of these constructions and inviting public into open spaces allow the programs to intertwine with each other. Design is the combination of human scale such as existing courtyards, inner gardens, front and back gardens and urban scale such as axis, squares and arcades.

The 5-star hotel and convention center are considered as the hill’s landmark approaching from the highway. It is located close to the entrance and service access. Hotel blocks also designed as an important landmark of the city silhouette with its rhythmic monolithic articulation by the sea. The 4-star hotel, on the other hand, is more modest in its sincere scale, is located on a quite peak level of the site.

LANDSCAPE

The site has hill morphology; existing military settlement is located on an upper plateau. The rhythmic Cypress trees planted along the main axis, a rational linear series of Pines (Pinus burutia). In time, strong wind creates a random pattern and identity to the field through spreading the seeds. Trees such as figs, mulberries and olives which later joined the natural texture formed sub patterns. Apart from this, the trees sprouting the ruins and the cracks of the concrete surfaces are also creates a diversification.

While unused large concrete surfaces are used for massive scale retail program, even the trees that come out of the cracks are carefully protected.
It has been ensured that nature and architectural programs are not dominating each other. Also in the programs the densities are equalized, and that human circulation are diversified and distributed through the site.

Vista terraces, decks on windy edge, excursion path/ jogging, sheltered corridors from the wind, PARK with market area/ art displays/ picnic and recreation/ cycling path in the heart of the project are the potentials in proposal. With its active public interaction the site will have a valuable public memory in future.

New texture implementing to nature will mutually exist together and become part of their surroundings.

Hillside and surroundings are reserved for recreational use within the nature. Massing are located on plateau within the existing built formation. The pasture, which in our perspective constitutes the most important source of biodiversity, has been enriched, enables to continue the tradition of local sheep grazing. Fire burned down maquies and meadow is reinterpreted and enriched with new local plantation such as Stipha aurea, Pennisetum sps, Acorus spp, Carex sps, Festuca sps, Miscanthus sps, Leymus, Arundo donax, Cortederia selloana, Muhlenbergia capilaris…
