Part of a much larger project to clean up and rehabilitate this ancient chain of wetlands along the Gulf coast, the Wetland Centre aims to provide information and education about this unique environment and to encourage its preservation. The architecture of the centre uses the existing topography of the site to minimise the structure’s visual impact. Upon arrival, visitors are led underground along a pathway into a linear gallery with a transparent wall that allows them to view the birds of the wetland in their natural habitat. The centre also contains documentation and displays about the wetlands, and a cafeteria and shop.

Wasit Tabiat Koruma Alanı ve Ziyaretçi Merkezi

Birleşik Arap Emirlikleri'nin üçüncü büyük şehri olan Şarika'daki tabiat koruma alanı ve ziyaretçi merkezi, 2005'te ıslah edilmeye başlamadan önce yıllarca çöplük olarak kullanılmış. Şimdi ise pek çok kuş türüne ev sahipliği yapıyor.

Wasit Tabiat Koruma Alanı aslen bir atık su ve çöp bölgesiydi. Zarar gören ekosistemin rehabilitasyon süreci 2005’te başladı. Alandan 40,000 m²’lik çöp kaldırıldı, 35,000 ağaç yeniden dikildi, alan toksik kimyasallardan temizlendi ve alandaki tuz plakalarıyla kıyıdaki tuz tepeleri koruma altına alındı.

Göçmen olmayan kuşların alana geri dönmesi için yapılan, yıllar süren çalışmalardan sonra Wasit Tabiat Parkı şimdi 350 kuş türüne ev sahipliği ediyor. Alan 33,000 göçmen kuşa konaklama bölgesi sağlıyor ve Şarika şehrine nefes veriyor.

Doğal çevreyi korumak, insanları sulak alanların ekosistemleri konusunda eğitmek ve alana -veya emirlikteki diğer alanlara- gelen kuşlar hakkında bilgi vermek için sulak alan ziyaretçi merkezi kuruldu. Merkez kuş gözlemcileri ve araştırmacılar için bir cennet haline geldi.

Merkezin mimarisi çevresiyle uyumlanıyor ve doğal manzaraya en az görsel müdahalede bulunmak için varolan topoğrafyayı kullanıyor. Gelen ziyaretçiler bir yaya yoluyla zemin altındaki doğrusal galeriye alınıyorlar. Burada, tamamen transparan olan yüzey ziyaretçilerin çevredeki kuşları incelemelerine ve alanın bir parçası olmalarına imkan veriyor.
