“The global crisis triggered by the novel coronavirus pandemic caused the postponement of 27th World Congress of Architects to July 2021. We regret the inconvenience caused to everyone, and hope we can count on your understanding.

Our spirits have been raised by this new challenge facing everyone committed to upgrading human living conditions. Never has the theme of a World Congress of Architects been more prophetic: All the Worlds. Just One World. Architecture 21.

We thus wish to reiterate our invitation to join us in Rio de Janeiro, the Marvellous City.

Architects from all over the world, urban thinkers, researchers, faculty and students, builders, social and youth movements, IT and systems companies, academic and multilateral institutions, political and national representatives were all invited to meet up against the breath-taking landscapes of Rio, in order to compare and share experiences related to the construction of social living areas. Now, with this new and brutal global reality caused by the pandemic, we are being urged more than ever to reflect and prepare proposals on what we want for our cities and our planet. This means that the invitation is extended even more broadly.

This situation is a global calamity. But above all, it is a call to accountability for the way in which we are building up our living contexts.

The 27th World Congress of Architects UIA2021RIO moves up to a new level. It becomes part of the drive to rethink and propose a fairer and more supportive world, with better designed and more solidly built areas for the use of all.

The Programme for the 27th World Congress of Architects remains unchanged. Obviously, adaptations will be required, depending on the availability of more than a hundred speakers who have already been contacted. Nevertheless, we are confident that this will be a successful event. In conceptual and scientific terms, it is aligned with the goals established by the United Nations, UN-Habitat and UNESCO.

However, now we are also responsible for moving ahead and beyond, when interpreting new challenges related to the future of cities.

The 27th World Congress is the cornerstone of the calendar for the Rio World Capital of Architecture UNESCO-UIA 2020, which will now extend through to 2021, until at least the date of this major event.

The Congress itself will be held in the historic heart of Rio de Janeiro, which safeguards an architectural heritage covering four and a half centuries. These national assets include magnificent examples of architecture ranging from colonial to contemporary. Noteworthy among them is one of the most important buildings in Modern Architecture, formerly the Ministry of Education and Culture and today the Palácio Capanema palace. Designed in 1936 by a team of young architects – Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Jorge Moreira, Afonso Reidy, Ernani Vasconcelos and Carlos Leão – on the basis of an original sketch by Le Corbusier, the Palácio Capanema will be one of the venues for the 27th World Congress of Architects.

Named as the Marvellous City for its breath-taking landscapes and its unique terrain, Rio de Janeiro is home to a friendly, warm people endowed with ample artistic talents, eager to welcome visitors and make friends. The links connecting up its beaches, forests and constructions are unparalleled and unforgettable.

Consequently, Rio is also a great place to address the major challenges facing Architecture in the XXI century. A city with amazing contrasts, its favela slums are among the urban elements that most clearly represent the difficulties encountered by cities with exponential growth, characteristic of the emerging world. This is a challenge on which this Congress must reflect now to an even greater extent.

One of the best months to visit Rio, July is usually sunny but mild, allowing visitors to enjoy all its natural beauty and cultural attractions.

Sharing the same name as its capital, Rio de Janeiro State is also a special place, with countless hill towns and beachfront communities offering a wide range of attractions.

Similarly, the entire country packed with opportunities for visitors to enjoy exploring its culture. It is well worthwhile getting to know the enchantments of Brazil, famed since earlier colonial times as a Paradise on Earth.

Dear colleagues from All the Worlds, welcome to Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

Cordially,

Sérgio Magalhães
President, Organising Committee
27th World Congress of Architects – UIA2021RIO”
