At the California College of the Arts (CCA) two-week Summer Institute in Sustainable Design you will gain first-hand experience in sustainable design concepts and practices through direct interaction with nature in Point Reyes. You will then learn how to apply this knowledge in the urban environment of San Francisco. Unlike the typical "talking head" conference, the CCA Summer Institute offers a focused, relaxed atmosphere for learning about sustainable design from working professionals, experienced practitioners, and instructors from CCA, Stanford, MIT, and other top academic institutions in the United States and England.
Institute instructors and speakers are pioneers in the advancing field of sustainability and are eager to share their expertise and experience with you.
Come establish a network of colleagues and craft an appropriate personal approach to apply green design strategies to conventional design criteria: form, function, performance, and cost.
Quickly gain the skills to position yourself as a sustainable-design leader at your company or workplace.
While numerous speakers and special guests will bring their particular expertise to individual sessions, Mandana MacPherson, entrepreneur and faculty at CCA and Stanford University, will be present throughout the two weeks to provide a consistent overview to the program.
Each person will receive comprehensive materials and gain insight and practical skills that increase knowledge and awareness of diverse areas relating to sustainability:
- Appropriate materials & technology
- Life-cycle analysis (LCA)
- Biomimicry
- Closed-loop systems
- Green chemistry
- Business models, stakeholders, ethics & world economies
- Climate change
- Energy efficiency
- Green marketing
- Overseas manufacturing
- Waste & recycling
- Agriculture & ranching
